The Fallen

One-hundred-and-fifty years ago, Americans went to war with themselves. The Fallen is a collection of Civil War battlefield post mortem photos of Confederate and Union dead, found in public and private image collections -- using contemporary accounts, diaries, images and historical documents to identify dates, locations and units of the deceased. These sometimes horrific images archive a chapter of 19th century mortuary photography seldomly glimpsed by the American general public.
